Swarm Robotics

What concept is shared by smart houses, the Internet of Things (IoT), smart mobility AND Industry 4.0? The concept of using self-organizaing swarms of cyber-physical systems (CPSs). Typically, a CPS does not come alone: Swarm robotics increases dynamics, connectivity, and complexity of CPSs. This calls for features like adaptability, scalability, robustness, and self-configuration – features that can be provided with nature-inspired swarm intelligence.

“In this talk, I will present an overview of the recent efforts in swarm robotics as a technology to coordinate a large number of simple robots like insects, ants and other animals that display swarm behaviour.”

Dr. Melanie Schranz

is a senior researcher at Lakeside Labs, involved in the acquisition, leadership and applied research in different swarm-related projects (e.g. CPSwarm, BugWright2, and SWILT).

Melanie’s major research interests cover engineering of swarm intelligence for cyber-physical systems.

She is a reviewer and board member for multiple conferences like for example the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, Conference on Adaptive and Self-Adaptive Systems and Applications & American Control Conference.
